INTRODUCTION

World Diabetes Day is an international observance on 14th November every year to raise awareness about diabetes across the globe. This day is cherished by millions affected by diabetes and brings out the issues of prevention, early diagnosis, and proper care. Various global activities and events occur across communities to disseminate knowledge about healthy lifestyles and access to appropriate health services. The campaign of World Diabetes Day also acts as an important mobilising platform in the fight against chronic conditions, empowering individuals to take action in managing their health.

HISTORY

World Diabetes Day was formed by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation in 1991 to tackle the rising rate of diabetes. It is on 14th  November to mark the discovery of insulin by Sir Frederick Banting in 1922. First, it was a campaign to create awareness and education about diabetes. In 2006, it became a United Nations day, which made the day more significant around the world, and there is also a greater emphasis on access to education and care for diabetes. The day is focused on a specific theme related to diabetes management and prevention, such as promoting healthy lifestyles or addressing the psychological aspects of living with the disease. It mobilises millions worldwide through rallies, seminars, and advocacy for improved healthcare policies.

The General Assembly adopted Resolution 61/225 in 2007 which designated 14th November as World Diabetes Day, recognising “the urgent need to pursue multilateral efforts to promote and improve human health and provide access to treatment and health-care education.”

The resolution also encouraged Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes in line with the sustainable development of their healthcare systems.

SIGNIFICANCE TO INTERNATIONAL LAW

Article 12 of the ICESCR allows the ICESCR to recognise the right to health of all individuals. WDD advocates for countries to offer multi-speciality healthcare facilities for diabetes and promotes policies providing optimum attention to the treatment of diabetes disease along with educational practices.

World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for NCDs, is an action plan which outlines responses to include diabetes in the framework of non-communicable diseases. World Diabetes Day aligns with the goals of the WHO by aiming to educate the public and urging governments to implement effective health measures.

CONCLUSION

World Diabetes Day serves as a vital global initiative aimed at raising awareness, promoting education, and advocating for better healthcare access for individuals affected by diabetes. By mobilising communities and fostering collaboration among governments and organisations, this observance emphasises the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and effective management of diabetes. The recognition by the United Nations and alignment with the World Health Organization's goals underscore the collective responsibility to improve healthcare policies and practices. Ultimately, World Diabetes Day empowers individuals and communities to take proactive steps in managing their health and combating the challenges posed by this chronic disease.
